President’s Message
Welcome message from the President-elect of HKSCP
Dr. Anthony R. Dickinson
(Chartered Psychologist (BPS, UK)., AFBPsS, C.Sci., PhD., Dip.Neurosci.)
Welcome to the HKSCP website, and to what for many will be perhaps your first encounter with the Society, it’s membership, services, and professional activities. I sincerely hope that your relationship with the Hong Kong Society of Counselling and Psychology (HKSCP) will prove an invaluable one, whether your own personal interests be driven at this time by the need to seek information or advice as a client in search of professional guidance, a student of psychology in early career, professional counsellor active in public/private practice, or an academic researcher engaged in cutting edge social science, medicine or psychiatry.
Having myself had the fortune of operating in each of these capacities over the years, it is my great pleasure to have been invited to oversee the many new professional and developmental activities of the HKSCP over the coming years, as it seeks to serve the general public, as well as its own professional membership alike. Through the activities of the various divisions and committees continuing their excellent work within each their own immediate areas of expertise, I have no doubt that the evolution of the HKSCP will nonetheless result in a growing Society, its strength derived from its increasingly diversified, yet commonly focused, theatres of applied professional counseling and psychology.
As examples of two of the new HKSCP developments in which I will be personally engaged during the coming six months or so, I wish to share the following initiatives which will be of significant practical value both to professional practitioners, and to the public community here in Hong Kong (and possibly later in Greater China, and elsewhere also). It is proposed that the Society set up a Registry of certified and/or licensed members in current practice, based upon both their academic and professional training activities, the quality control of which will be overseen by a Society examination board appointed specifically for the purpose. The HKSCP’s Registries will initially provide listings of its certified member practitioners, psychometric test administrators (CTA), and test consultants (CTC). These lists will be available and searchable, free, online, to any member of the public wishing to find the best professional counseling or psychological services in their area of need.
A second eduventure for members will be the establishment of HKSCP-certified training courses leading to the award of CTA and CTC certifications and licensing, for those members sufficiently qualified and wishing to offer professional psychometric test administration and/or consultancy as a part of their counseling practice.
A third development under way for the coming year involves the setting up of an annual conference, and the dissemination of some of the most relevant research activities of significance to practitioners of counseling and psychology here in Hong Kong and greater China – the organizing committee for which is planning to report its progress and proposals later this year (2013).
I now sign off in the hope that you will enjoy your interaction(s) with the Society, in the knowledge that the very existence of the HKSCP, with its activities focused upon securing the best professional standards of knowledge and competence of its membership. This service is being undertaken solely for the purpose of supporting those members of the public wishing to employ the services of professional member practitioners, whether they be situated in public, community, or private practice.
Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments, or ideas as may relate to the past activities of the HKSCP, its current growth, and future developments, [email protected] remembering that,.. “the very worst thing that can happen, is that we are all likely going to learn something about ourselves over the coming year or two !!’
